Home 2 Months!
I can't believe only 2 months ago we were walking through customs and immigration, finalizing Katelyn's citizenship here on US soil. A few short hours later, she was meeting her two big brothers and had no idea what a "home" and a "family" were all about. Although it seems like the time has flown by, on the other hand it seems like Katelyn has been a part of our family forever.
We continue to be amazed at how wonderfully she has transitioned, how affectionate she is, how healthy and smart she is, and I could go on and on. The biggest issue with orphans who've been institutionalized for more that 18 months (she was for 30 months) is attachment disorder (they don't feel attached to you and don't respond well to affection). She is warm and loving, always wanting to cuddle and hug on everyone. I was worried about her going to church nursery for the few short hours on Sunday and Wednesday, but she loves it and actually grabs her bag and walks in while yelling "Byeeeee!”
Her English comprehension is amazing. She knows exactly what we are saying and will, for the most part, do what we ask. She can point to all her major body parts and say them. She can count to 5 and has been saying some letters (thanks Leapfrog!). She started wearing underwear after being home 2 weeks, and for the past 7 weeks has only had 2 accidents!
She loves her brothers and they love her. When they are too rough with her, you better believe she lets us know! She has a bit of an attitude (what 2 year-old doesn't?) and is sassy at times. She will look me or Brian in the eye when we tell her to do something she doesn't want to do, and she'll sometimes spit her tongue out or roll her eyes. WOAH! That's always fun to deal with! She has consequences for her actions and will throw herself on the floor in timeout, while kicking her shoes off and scooting backwards until she reaches the wall. I just let her throw her fit and once she is calm, I'll pay attention to her. It's funny how regardless of where raised, toddlers have many similar attributes! :-)
She is still a Momma's girl, but loves to wrestle and run around with Daddy. She loves to jump on the trampoline, swing (super high) in the baby swings, and run around at the park. She enjoys coloring at the table while Parker and Trevor do their homework. She has been sleeping fairly well...but is a light sleeper so she’ll wake every so often with noise in the house. She is still sharing a room with the boys and although it's worked out fine, I'll be happy when we move this summer and she'll have her own space. We currently have 2 bedrooms up and 2 bedrooms down and we all wanted to remain upstairs so she doesn't have her own bedroom. I personally look forward to decorating a pink room at our new place!!! :-)
Most of you know we adopted under China's special needs program. Katelyn was categorized as having a cleft lip first degree (which is just a cleft in the pink part of the lip...not all the way up to the nose), but when we met her in China, we were a little shocked to not see any noticeable cleft. I guess she technically has a little un-even lip tone, but who doesn't? We are safely saying she is healthy and won't require any surgeries like originally thought.
Everyone's prayers throughout this entire process have ensured the transition was smooth, and we are so thankful for your love and support! We are so blessed to be the parents to Katelyn.
We asked Katelyn what she wanted to do to celebrate the beginning of her third month in the USA, and she said she wanted to go to DISNEY WORLD! We leave tomorrow to spend a week in Florida. :-)
